Every year, on my daughter Bella Zoe's birthday and the anniversary of her passing, April 9, 2010, I’ve poured my heart out on Facebook. I’ve shared the little moments we had, the conversations, my feelings, and letters to her—always reminding her of my unshakable love. But something has always felt incomplete. There was no tangible way to hold onto her memory, no way to truly reflect the tremendous love she had for her family, her friends, and the world around her. Bella’s life was about connection, celebration, and giving, and I wanted to honor her in a way that would capture the essence of who she was.

Bella Zoe Dakis was a radiant and vibrant young girl, bursting with spunk and sparkle. She had this magical ability to light up every room she walked into, leaving an undeniable impact on everyone she met. Her heart was generous beyond words, always finding ways to give to others, always ready to bring joy. Her name, Bella Zoe—meaning "Beautiful Life"—was perfectly fitting, and she lived every moment with love and purpose.

I will never forget the last night of Bella’s life. A girl at school needed a prom dress, and Bella didn’t hesitate to offer her own, even though it was her favorite. I argued with her, worried the dress might be ruined or lost, but Bella looked at me with her signature confidence and said, "She needs it more than I do." She looked like a Greek Goddess in that dress, but her selflessness shone even brighter. Before the girl left, Bella added, “Let me know if you need any jewelry, and I’ll bring it by tomorrow.” That’s who Bella was—always thinking of others, always giving without hesitation.

It was that one sweet, selfless act that became the inspiration for PROJECT PROM: The Bella Zoe Experience. In her honor, I began collecting Winter Ball, Prom, and Cocktail Dresses in all shapes and sizes to donate to teens who otherwise might not have the means to attend these special events. Over time, the mission grew, expanding to include handbags, shoes, costume jewelry, and even young men’s attire.

Bella Zoe may no longer be with us in person, but her legacy is alive, spreading kindness and joy just as she would have wanted. Her beautiful life, though far too short, continues to inspire and remind us all of the power of love and generosity.

WHAT IS THE BELLA ZOE PROJECT?

Our goal is simple yet profound: to make sure that every teen, no matter their circumstances, can feel confident, celebrated, and ready to create memories that will last a lifetime. Through PROJECT PROM, Bella’s incredible spirit lives on—her light, her generosity, her love. She taught us all that giving to others, even in the smallest ways, can change lives. And now, through this project, her memory continues to touch the hearts of so many.
